Programs in Laos
Laos, officially the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, is one of the very few untouched regions left in the world. The clean crisp air and bright blue skies make travelers yearn to linger in the region. Laos traces its history back to the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century.
The majority of the country’s population is ethnic Lao but the population also consists of hill peoples such as the Hmong, Yao, Dao, and Shan that have resided in isolated mountainous regions of Laos. The predominant religion found in Laos is Theravada Buddhism. Animism is also practiced among the mountain tribes and there are small pockets of Christians found in the Vientiane area. Much of the culture is heavily influenced by Theravada Buddhism and is reflected throughout the country in everything from literature and performing arts to language and local temples.
Upon arrival, students will immediately begin a 2 to 3 day river trip down the Maekong River to Luang Prabang. This trip allows students to see much of the countryside along the river and visit some of the local hill tribe villages.
Students will also immediately begin to study Laotian history, culture and language. Some lessons will be taught in a classroom setting while others come to life during local field trips. The basic foundation of understanding that these lessons provide will help students enjoy and understand the culture around them in addition to building basic communication skills.
